How to Market your Christian website -04/24/2003

This is a constantly changing topic (thus the date). You are encouraged to try this on your own. If you run out of time or get frustrated - contact us.  mark@hightechministry.org

Quick Overview - The Process:

1. Visithttp://www.christian-internet.com/webmarketing.html for a basic overview

Just being online doesn't guarantee you that anybody will visit you. You must do all the same marketing and networking things you do in the real world, on the cyber world.

2. You must know who is visiting you and how they found you. You must spread the word about your site. AND, you must know what KEYWORDS people who might want to visit you will use in the search engines.

3. You must be visible to them in places other than your website ie. on other websites.

4. You need to have people refer your website to others. This is best done by a Recommend Us page on your website and by asking people to refer you.

5. You should keep in contact with those people who are always interested in hearing from you. This is best done with an e-newsletter. Start a low cost one at www.injesus.com and have the opt in option on your website (or have us design one into your website). Don't overdo it and provide news of interest to THEM. You need to get everybody's email address that is interested in hearing from you.

The Process:

I. The most basic place to start is putting your website address on EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF PAPER that is connected to your organization. This means business cards, stationary, envelopes, bulletins - well you get the picture.

This includes having a sign on your storefront or church property. Very important, and very basic.

II. It is important in the long run to have many sites linked to yours. Surf and ask other sites to put a link to your site. Roll up your sleeves and get online - allow 1 hour every week or two for a couple months. It is best to be linked on sites that your potential visitors would likely be visiting. However, the more the better.

It is important in the long run to have many sites linked to yours. Surf and ask other sites to put a link to your site. Just email them with a short and polite request.  Suggestion:  make it easy for them!  Have a Link to Us page with a banner, a button, and a 10 word text link that they can use to set the link to your site. Possibly even include this info in your email - or at least type the Link to Us page name into the email.

Check your effectiveness by getting the Free google search bar at www.google.com. It will give you your page rank and tell you how many back links to your site there are. You can also simply go to google.com and type in  link:http://www.yourdomainname.com to get the list of back links.

III. Specialized directories - surf and find specialized directories that will list you for free.

IV. Good old fashioned howdy do's - visit sites that might have people interested in your site and say howdy do. Ask them to visit your site and let you know what they think or give them a 25 word overview of your site. Personalize it. Caution:  don't go crazy with this. Be selective and wise.  See a sample letter draft below. ( designed for Third World ministries )

V. e-Newsletters - start an e-Newsletter with information that would be of interest to your visitors. Maybe a weekly devotional...maybe 'how to's', etc.  Don't send them a bunch of jokes or forwarded emails or too much sales info on YOU or a bunch of links.

To be effective at this you need to have their voluntarily given email address. Hold a drawing and collect email addresses, put a fish bowl out to have people put their email address in ... get creative.

e-Newsletters properly done are likely your best source of 'business' - often more effective then your website. Again,www.injesus.com has a free service that DOES NOT have the typical yahoo.com banner with scantily clad women or spy cams. Pay attention.

VI. Email Addresses and Signatures - this one is sorely missed by most and a very basic idea. ( for more help on this topic, seeEmail Basics. )

#1. make sure your email address contains your domain name ie. don't have an aol.com address when you have your own website. You are advertising aol and not your business or church.   Get emails such aspastorjohn@mychurch.com  etc.

#2. create an email signature just as you do when you send a letter.  (can you believe how basic this is?!)  example:

Yours in Christ,
Pastor John
"Rebuilding relationships one by one"
Please visit our website at:  www.mychurch.com

Email me anytime: pastorjohn@mychurch.com

How to setup: Open Outlook Express ( or your email program ) click tools, options, signatures. Enter in your signature. Do this BEFORE you start your other email marketing programs.

VII. Lastly, buy your traffic. (oh well @#%@ :)  Purchase keyword ads at places like www.google.com and www.overture.com

Other Important Basics:

Follow this basic process and be done quickly and have an effective presence.

I. Make sure your site is search engine friendly. ( seesearchengines.htm ) and that you have a traffic analyzer on your site - get a free one atwww.extreme-dm.com if you don't already have one.

II. Now Break Out Your Checkbook (if you haven't already done this search engine step below)

1. Submit for annual spidering subscription at Inktomi -www.positiontech.com - $40/yr.

2. Buy keywords at www.overture.com -  1 - 5 cents per click - $5 account setup

3. Buy keywords at www.google.com - purchase minimum bid price - $5 account setup.

4. Buy listing at yahoo.com if you have a commercial business - $300/yr.

There. The above will save you hundreds of dollars, and hours of time.
